The Holbrooke is conveniently located in the city center with its quaint shops, galleries and quality restaurants. There's nothing ostentatious about the hotel entrance or the lobby and bar. I liked that. the dark wood interior is warm, welcoming and evokes the historical character of the city. It's clearly a favorite watering hole for locals giving the place a homey feel. The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated with period decor. Loved that there is no TV in the rooms. The hotel and neighborhood are quiet at night. My second floor room offered views of the neighborhood behind the hotel with trees in full autumn metamorphosis. Glorious in the early morning light. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful, but did not stand on the kind of ceremony that sometimes makes service too stiff and formal. I'll be back.

Absolutely enjoyable stay, but I will nitpick to give others a good idea.||||Good: Visual aspect and restaurant||The lobby area looked upscale and had a LOT of character. The restaurant/bar inside, called Golden Gate Saloon, which is visible from the entrance, has been in operation since 1852, was a big part of the vibe for me. Upscale decor, which appeared to be Gold Rush/Frontier inspired, modernized the Victorian construction. Ceiling fans that run on a pulley system, and a cage-like Victorian elevator updated with transparent glass walls, all contributed to the character of the lobby and restaurant.||The food was delicious; not too different from the price range of an upscale restaurant. Absolutely loved the Brussels sprouts (a starter), chilaquiles, and steak entrees.||||Good: Service||Concierges and servers were completely friendly and eager to converse when initiated. No complaints there. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, drinking water and many other necessities were available upon request, which was wonderful.||||Good: Location||Our main reason for booking Holbrooke was its location 30 minutes drive from our favorite swimming hole on the breathtaking, clear waters of the Yuba River. Downtown Grass Valley was an absolute pleasure as well, the Holbrooke being situated on a sloping main street with a lively appearance. Highlights include decent espresso drinks at a cookie shop a short walk down the street. A walking-only alley off the main street is populated with more businesses, including an ice cream/candy shop, and a "metaphysical supply store" where we got a fun and accurate Tarot/Astrology reading. Everything absolutely walk-able including the Safeway supermarket.||||OK: Our room experience, in the Purcell House||Rather than staying in a room in Holbrooke's main building, I'd unknowingly booked a room in the detached building behind the main hotel, called the Purcell house, which appears to be a former home with Victorian construction, converted into hotel rooms. ||||Our room was clean, with nice colonial and Victorian inspired furniture and frontier/Gold Rush design. The bathroom sink and shower had Victorian fixtures, which was a huge plus aesthetically. However, the walls and sheets of the bedroom were all mostly white, and had a plain vibe, different from the room photos I'd seen online which had a little more color in the decor.||||Room temperature is set for the whole floor/story, rather than having a thermostat in every room. The floor did not seem to be uniformly level; it had the warped feel of historical construction. ||||My least favorite aspect was the poor sound isolation afforded by the old building construction: quiet hours are enforced because guests can hear each other between rooms, though we didn't hear much other than the occasional shower and floor creaking, muffled by wall to wall carpet from other guests' footsteps in an adjacent room. Not too bad, but worth mentioning.||||Overall I love this place and look forward to booking at the Holbrooke Hotel again, but want to see a room in the main building, rather than the Purcell house.

The hotel is beautiful and full of awesome historic features. Heads up it does not have a tv. The sheets and pillows were great, but I literally could not see my husband laying in the bed as he had sunk in so deep into what he described as a "body dent". All that said it was a very cool place to stay!

Absolute favorite hotel and restaurant hands down! My husband planned an amazing surprise proposal with the help of the staff! We have always dined and stayed there, and recently had our post I do wedding party at their speak easy. Anthony was a joy to work with, and always had excellent communication! They made our evening so special. Our guests raved over the drinks and food!! Then this week we needed to pull off a last minute very special surprise. Once again Anthony was on it and he and his team made it such a wonderful day to remember! Whether you are going there for a meal or planning an event, you will not be disappointed

It was our first time in Grass Valley, and the Holbrooke lived up to every expectation! The rooms were clean, tastefully decorated, and full of period charm — plus they were refreshed daily. The dining room and bar were beautiful and lively on Friday night, complete with live music! Kim and the entire staff were incredibly helpful and gave us great local recommendations. Augustina and Caitlin were also incredible hosts and truly elevated our dining experience with their warmth and attention to detail. The parking lot is conveniently located just behind the building, which made it easy to come and go during our river day trips. The food was delicious, and the cocktails were perfectly balanced. All in all, a 10/10 stay!

We came here for my wife’s birthday! We unfortunately did not get to meet any Victorian or early American ghosts. Dang. But regardless we had an amazing time! The place has such a modern yet historical charm. Everything from claw foot tubs to old elevators. And the restaurant and bar are incredible. Get the Brussels sprouts, what the chef does to them I don’t know but they were life changing.

I've stayed at the Holbrooke twice: first time in February and this time in July. My experience in February was lovely, which is why I came back. My experience this time around was sadly not as enjoyable. The good stuff is that the rooms are lovely. Beautifully decorated, comfortable bed, and great AC. (Although I should note that the AC made a very loud, annoying humming noise for 30 seconds a couple times every hour...) We had a room with a balcony which was nice. The front desk staff is also super nice and accommodating. There is a parking lot in back and we had no trouble finding parking. The first time we were here, we were in the main house in a room at the end of a long hall. It felt pretty quiet and peaceful. This past time we were in a room at the top of the stairs, right by the elevator. If you walk down the stairs, you're in the bar. They start playing music in the lobby around 7am (quieter stuff) and don't stop until 10pm weekdays and close to midnight on weekends (louder music in the evenings). We were able to hear the boom boom of the bass all day, whenever we were in our rooms, and at night trying to fall asleep (we had to get up early so needed early nights). I was also disappointed with their hot breakfast, which they serve 9-11am. I got there at 10:30am, and there were three mini muffins left and maybe one spoon of egg scramble. I went across the street to the cafe and got coffee and a better muffin. I'd probably come back if I could get a quiet room again, but room 14 is tough if you like peace and quiet. Especially with our dogs, who could hear every person coming up the stairs. Oh, I also wish they would provide a bath mat, because the tub, though charming, can get quite slick and there are no handles.
